The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says everything. Fun Things Always Happen After Sunset belongs to By Kilian's My Kind of Love collection, a line built around ingredients that are unexpected, specific, and immediately recognizable. Kilian Hennessy's brief for this one was simple on the surface: capture what happens after the sun goes down. Not another nightclub fragrance. Something that holds the actual moment, that first drink, the bartender who winks, the shoulders finally dropping. Calice Becker worked from that energy, building it like a cocktail from the garnish down.
The grass note arrives crisp, almost wet, like something just cut. Beneath it, blackcurrant syrup keeps the opening grounded in edible sweetness without tipping into candy. The lychee heart is where the fragrance earns its keep, offering a translucent quality that feels distinctly light and bright. The base, musk, rose, patchouli, doesn't try to overpower. It simply makes sure the night ends close to the skin, not floating off into nothing.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, grass first, then blackcurrant syrup arriving just behind. That sequence matters. The grass provides something crisp and green before the sweetness arrives to soften it, so the edible quality builds rather than announces. Lychee introduces a luminous, subtly floral dimension that distinguishes its aromatic profile. The drydown is where patience pays off. Musk comes up through the lychee, rose adds a quiet warmth, and patchouli grounds everything into something skin-close and warm. By the end, it's less a fragrance and more a memory of one.
Cultural impact
Part of By Kilian's My Kind of Love collection, this one carries a cocktail framing that gives it a specific identity, not a nightclub scent, but something that works across seasons and occasions. The fruity-floral character comes into its own in warmer weather.
