The beginning
Clary Sage was composed by Francis Kurkdjian, a perfumer whose portfolio spans the full range from bright soliflores to dense, resin-heavy compositions. The brief here centered on an herb most people associate with aromatherapy shelves, and the goal was to turn it into something with weight, structure, and leather in its bones. The formula draws on clary sage absolute at the top, layered with cardamom for spice and lift. Hay absolute brings a sun-warm sweetness to the early development, while leather and myrrh handle the architectural work, leather for a worn, tactile feel, myrrh for the resinous bitterness that keeps the composition from collapsing into softness.
Clary sage reads differently here than it does in most compositions built around it. The opening burst of the absolute is green and slightly bitter, the way the plant smells when you crush a leaf between your fingers, vegetal and alive. Cardamom lifts the top with a cool, almost metallic heat, the kind of spice that tingles rather than warms. Hay absolute settles in early, lending its particular sweetness, the scent of dried grasses stacked in late summer, without veering into the powdery territory that hay sometimes drifts toward.
The evolution
On skin, the opening is a rush of cardamom and clary sage working together in bright, herbal tension. The clary sage reads as a living plant at this stage, green and slightly bitter, with the cardamom adding a cool, fizzy heat underneath. It feels vivid and immediate, like walking past a garden after rain. As the top notes settle, the leather makes its presence known, arriving with a warm, supple weight that shifts the composition from fresh to lived-in. There's no gradual fade here; the leather shoulders the sage aside and takes command of the center. Myrrh emerges underneath, adding a resinous bitterness that prevents the leather from reading as a standard perfume-house accord and gives it edge instead. The heart phase lingers with the herbal and structural notes coexisting, the sage still present but now woven through smoke and resin rather than standing alone.

Clary Sage has found its audience among wearers who gravitate toward green, herbal compositions but want something with more weight and edge than the light, aquatic-leaning fragrances that tend to dominate the broader market.
