Why it exists.
The beginning
Burberry Hero Eau de Parfum arrived in 2022 with perfumer Aurélien Guichard constructing the composition around a trio of cedarwood oils, the same structural core that anchors the entire Hero collection. He then layered benzoin and frankincense on top, giving the fragrance a deeper, more resinous character than the standard Hero profile. Where the original EDT leans bright and woody, the EDP trades some of that lift for incense smoke and pine needles. The result reads as the colder-weather version of the scent, built for the same man but suited to a different temperature and a different mood.
The cedarwood trio is the architectural choice here. Guichard stacked Himalayan, Virginia, and Atlas cedars rather than picking one, each contributing a slightly different grain to the overall texture. The Atlas brings a sharper bite, Virginia adds a drier, dustier quality, and the Himalayan rounds it out with a softer warmth. Around that frame, frankincense adds the sacred-smoke lift and benzoin brings a sweetness that keeps the whole thing from tipping into pure conifer.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes read like walking into a wood-paneled room that someone just polished. The opening cuts through cleanly before the pine needles and frankincense arrive like a draft from an old library. The cedarwood trio takes hold somewhere around the 30-minute mark and runs the show for the next several hours, steady and unshifting. The benzoin creeps in later, sweet and low, tempering the sharpness without softening it into something generic. By the late hours, what remains is a warm, skin-close blend of cedar and benzoin resin, intimate and lived-in. The progression is less dramatic arc, more patient settling, a fragrance that rewards patience and quiet attention rather than demanding immediate reaction.
Cultural impact
Hero EDP has settled into a reliable middle ground in the men's fragrance conversation. It appeals to wearers who want something approachable without being forgettable, a scent that performs well across occasions without demanding attention. The woody-resinous profile gives it enough character to stand apart from lighter fresh fragrances, while the benzoin softens the composition enough to avoid feeling severe or overly challenging.
