The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Celine Ripert designed Gentleman as a modern study in masculine composure for Brocard, the Russian house founded in 1864 on Moscow's Arbat. Ripert approaches fragrance construction with architectural precision, and Gentleman reflects her belief that masculinity can be simultaneously strong and nuanced. The fragrance channels a specific idea: the man who arrives precisely when he means to, composed but never cold. Brocard has long worked with natural materials sourced under strict sustainability guidelines, and this release embodies their commitment to craftsmanship over trend, creating something that feels timeless rather than of-the-moment.
The note structure reflects a specific philosophy: freshness should not preclude depth, and masculinity should not mean limitation. Lavender and sage bookend the fragrance with aromatic herbaceousness, while sandalwood and woods provide an enduring woody foundation that speaks to natural materials and traditional masculine perfumery. The inclusion of tea and mate suggests a more intellectual sensibility, appealing to those who find typical masculine fougeres too blunt. Tonka bean bridges the gap between aromatic freshness and woody warmth, creating cohesion across the scent's journey.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a collision of lavender and lemon, immediately establishing aromatic-citrus tension. Mint and aquatic notes amplify the freshness while pineapple and tea introduce unexpected complexity. As the opening settles, pineapple recedes and tea becomes more pronounced, creating an aromatic-tea character that sets the stage for the heart. Geranium and rose appear gradually, supported by lemon verbena's citrusy herbal note. Mate, with its distinctive smoky quality, emerges to add depth and prevent the heart from becoming merely pretty. The transition to the drydown happens smoothly: sage appears first, bringing an herbal bitterness that cuts through any residual sweetness from the fruits. Sandalwood and woods build steadily, while tonka bean provides a warm, ambery undertone that makes the final drydown feel both masculine and inviting, lingering for hours without overwhelming the space.
Cultural impact
For collectors drawn to narrative over hype, Brocard's limited releases offer something different from mainstream masculine positioning. The 2022 Gentleman stands apart for its structural choice, hiding complexity in the heart rather than leading with it. That mate note is the tell.
