Why it exists.
The beginning
Complex 2020 arrived in 2017 as the concentrated evolution of Boadicea the Victorious's original Complex, a deliberate recalibration rather than a rethinking. Perfumer John Stephen took what worked in the EDP and pushed the intensity higher, recalibrating the balance between the aromatic top, the incense heart, and the animalic base. The result is a Parfum that wears heavier and lasts longer than its predecessor, built for those who want the fragrance to do the work. This is supercharged in the most literal sense: more of everything that made the original worth revisiting, and nothing diluted for safety's sake.
What makes Complex 2020 structurally interesting is the tension between its top and base. Sage and basil are fleeting, bright, green, herbaceous, but they open the door to something that isn't going anywhere. The heart brings violet into dialogue with frankincense, which is an unusual pairing: violet is delicate, even powdery, where frankincense is smoke and solemnity. The resolution of that tension doesn't resolve neatly. The frankincense holds the middle ground, bridging the brief green clarity of the opening into the dark, animalic warmth of the base, oud, leather, and musk all arriving late and staying long. It's the kind of structure that keeps you guessing past the first hour.
The evolution
The opening announces itself without apology. Sage and basil arrive together, green, almost medicinal in their sharpness, with the kind of herbal clarity that cuts through before it settles. There is no easing in. Five minutes in, the violet begins to rise through the frankincense, and the character shifts from bright to something more contemplative. The frankincense takes over, not dramatically but persistently, smoke that sits behind the violet rather than overwhelming it. By the second hour, the top notes have fully receded and the base has established itself. Leather and oud anchor everything that follows, dense and slightly animalic, with the musk giving the whole thing a skin-like warmth that doesn't let go. On fabric, the oud and leather linger well into the next day, detectable on a collar or cuff the morning after. On skin, the drydown becomes intimate and close, the kind of presence that someone standing beside you will notice before you do.
