The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
B Exquisite landed in 2010, late in the House of Bijan's fragrance story but perfectly in step with the brand's old-world-meets-American swagger. Bijan Pakzad had spent decades dressing heads of state and entertainment royalty from his single by-appointment showroom on Rodeo Drive. Every garment, every scent he released was built for the insider who never needed to announce himself. B Exquisite arrived as a companion piece to the women's B Exquisite, both wrapped in the same oriental-spicy logic and housed in bottles that refused the understated restraint of French competitors.
What sets this composition apart is the way it stacks heat. Star anise brings the black licorice snap that opens the door, sweet and faintly herbal in that distinct anise way. Absinthe and rum follow with boozy, almost dangerous sweetness, layering green herbal bitterness over warm sugary rum until the opening feels almost cocktail-like. The leather and patchouli do what most fragrances only flirt with: they commit. Leather arrives with a dry, smoky, almost saddle-like weight while patchouli adds an earthy, dark cocoa edge that grounds the sweeter top notes.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to star anise, bright and almost sweet in that black-licorice way, the kind of note that announces itself the moment it hits skin. Absinthe cuts through next, green and herbal, sharper than expected, while rum underneath gives everything a warm alcoholic glaze that reads more like spiced cane spirit than cocktail. Bergamot adds lift without softening the edges, a faint citrus flicker that brightens the opening before the heavier notes take over. As the composition moves through the heart, cardamom and basil arrive with a cool spiced snap, basil contributing a fresh green-pepper sharpness that plays against the cardamom's cool, almost minty warmth. Violet leaf and leather settle in soon after, trading brightness for something denser.
Cultural impact
B Exquisite for Men arrived in 2010 under the Bijan banner, a fashion house already recognized for dressing heads of state and entertainment royalty from a single Rodeo Drive showroom. The fragrance carried that same swagger, refusing the clean, understated restraint that dominated much of the designer fragrance market at the time. Rather than chasing the fresh, aquatic, or citrus-driven trends of the early 2010s, B Exquisite went the other direction, leaning into a dense oriental-spicy composition built around absinthe, rum, star anise, leather, and patchouli.
