The beginning
Bijan with a Twist for Men arrived in 2001, a mid-period release from a house already associated with statement-making masculine fragrance. The Twist shares a family resemblance with the 1987 Bijan for Men, which won the FiFi Award for Men's Fragrance of the Year and built the brand's reputation for opulent, assertive scent, but it pulls toward something a little more approachable, a little more current. The brief went to Givaudan, a Swiss fragrance house with a long track record in composition. Six notes made the final cut, which is lean for a Bijan release given that another Bijan men's fragrance has been reported to contain around 98 essences. That restraint matters. The Twist reads as a deliberate compression of the house aesthetic rather than an attempt to outshine its predecessor.
What makes the composition structurally interesting is how few notes carry the entire weight. Bergamot, coriander, and lavender do the opening work in a tight triangle, then the composition pivots hard into amber, vanilla, and musk for the base. The transition from fresh-aromatic to sweet-oriental happens in the space those six notes leave between them. The compression gives the scent a clean architecture, the kind where every element has to pull weight or get cut.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all greeting. Bergamot cuts bright against coriander's warm pepper, and a thread of lavender keeps it from reading as a straight citrus cologne. There's a barbershop shadow here, but cleaned up, not nostalgic about it. It announces itself in the space of a lifted handshake. Around the 30-minute mark the pivot happens, and it happens fast. The citrus recedes. Amber and vanilla step forward together, and the lavender softens into something that reads more like skin warmth than herb. The coriander lingers as a faint spice underneath, just enough to keep the sweetness from going flat. The amber here has a honeyed quality, and the vanilla carries a creamy sweetness that feels more edible than candy-like. Together they build a warm, rounded core that dominates the middle hours. From hour three onward, it settles into a close-wearing amber-vanilla-musk drydown.

Bijan with a Twist occupies an unusual middle ground: it carries enough of the Bijan DNA to feel like part of the brand's lineage, while reading modern enough to wear in any contemporary setting without feeling like a period piece.
