The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
X-Series Surfing landed in 2018 as part of Avon's men's X-Series. The scent takes its name from surfing, but not the glossy, tropical version. It's the early-morning kind, when the water is still cold and you're wading in before anyone else shows up. The citrus-spice-wood structure mirrors that contrast: bright, then grounding, then something that holds on your skin long after the towel. There's a sharpness to the opening that reads like cold air on wet skin, a bracing lemon quality cut by the green, slightly bitter snap of verbena. Underneath that initial brightness, nutmeg sits close to the surface, warming the composition without tipping it into sweetness. As the minutes pass and the scent softens, the wood base begins to take over.
What makes this composition work isn't any single note. It's the conversation between them. Lemon and verbena give you that sharp freshness up top, the kind of scent that reads as cold air on wet skin with an herbal edge that keeps the citrus from feeling one-dimensional. Nutmeg and pimento warm it from underneath without turning sweet, adding a peppery quality that keeps the opening honest and grounded. The heart of clary sage and geranium pulls things into herbal territory, aromatic but clean, the green note that keeps everything from collapsing into something basic.
The evolution
The opening is all brightness. Lemon hits first, almost sharp enough to taste, with verbena giving it a herbal edge that keeps it from reading as cleaning product. Nutmeg sits underneath like a held breath, warming the opening without announcing itself. Pimento adds a subtle warmth in the early stages, a quiet peppery flicker that complements the spice without ever taking center stage. As the composition settles, the citrus starts to soften and the heart takes over. Clary sage brings a green, almost medicinal quality, balanced by geranium's rosy-aromatic lift. The clary sage and geranium work together to create an herbal core that feels clean and aromatic, the kind of middle phase that makes the fragrance versatile for daytime wear. Eventually, the composition shifts into its woody register.
Cultural impact
X-Series Surfing doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. The composition doesn't reach for niche territory or luxury codes. It just delivers a clean, warm, easy-to-wear scent that works for warm weather, casual settings, and the kind of days when a heavier fragrance would feel like too much. The citrus-spice-wood structure gives it enough complexity to feel considered, but it never asks you to think too hard about it. It's the bottle you keep in the gym bag or the weekend drawer, the one that gets used because it never asks anything of you.
