Why it exists.
The beginning
M.O.U.S.S.E II arrived as part of Oliver Valverde's series of olfactory experiments, each release a distinct attempt to push the chypre genre into unfamiliar territory. Where the original M.O.U.S.S.E leaned into forest-floor density, the sequel reframes the same obsession with green and moss through a cooler, more luminous lens. Mint, cardamom CO2, and lily of the valley cut through the original's density, while aldehydes add a chill that keeps the whole composition feeling freshly aired. Valverde called it cleaner and more invigorating, but that's an understatement. He took a chypre DNA and ran it through cold water. The result still feels rooted in oakmoss and sandalwood, but everything sits higher, lighter, and more alert, like a familiar melody transposed into a brighter key.
The interplay between Iso E Super and the aldehydes creates the composition's most distinctive effect. Iso E Super does heavy lifting underneath, lending a translucent woody haze that softens the edges of every other note without ever announcing itself. Ambroxan sits alongside it, adding a saline quality that makes the whole thing read cool rather than warm. The original's moss-and-earth gravity has been inverted, pulled upward and outward, achieved by reshaping the balance between natural and synthetic materials.
The evolution
The opening is sharp and immediate. Mint and aldehyde collide into something that smells like biting into a cold herb leaf while standing near a soap factory, bright and slightly metallic. Clove and black pepper arrive fast, warming the edges without softening them, and the cardamom CO2 threads through with a green, almost sizzling quality. Then the aldehydes begin to recede, and the composition relaxes into something unexpectedly smooth. Lily of the valley and rose absolute surface briefly, sweet and almost powdery, before the Iso E Super and ambroxan take over. The drydown is oakmoss absolute and sandalwood, grounded and quiet, with that white musk and ambroxan hum still lingering long after the top notes have faded. The mint ghosts in and out for hours, an unexpected signature that keeps pulling you back to your own wrist.
