Why it exists.
The beginning
IR1S x TROP1C4L landed in 2021 as part of Avant-Garden Lab's Mutant Flowers project, a collection built around an unlikely collision of florals and tropical references. Oliver Valverde, the perfumer behind the house, composes with a quiet structural clarity that lets each ingredient hold its own weight. The name itself is a coded shorthand: iris meeting tropical, collision by design. The Mutant Flowers concept treats familiar floral archetypes as raw material, pushing them toward climates they weren't traditionally bred for, and IR1S x TROP1C4L emerges from that line of thinking as one of the bolder crossings. Within the house's broader catalogue, the release reads as a study in contrasts: the cool, mineral gravity of iris pitched against the warm humidity of tropical fruit.
The composition refuses the obvious iris route. Instead of burying the root in suede and violet, Valverde surrounds it with Rhubafuran, a synthetic molecule that contributes a tart, almost candied rhubarb dimension without the heavy, syrupy weight the fruit usually carries. Lychee enters soon after, adding a translucent sweetness that hovers somewhere between mineral water and crystallised sugar. Rice paddy herb brings an unusual grassy note to the heart of the composition, grounding the iris in something wet, green, and faintly savoury.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes read almost electric: lemon zest and ginger spike through, sharp and clarifying, like stepping into a tiled room after rain. Ambroxan hovers underneath, giving everything a faint mineral halo. Around the thirty-minute mark, the iris arrives properly, cool and powdery, rooted and serious, flanked by melissa and elemi that keep the green thread alive. Patchouli is present but never heavy, more shadow than statement. By hour three the composition has settled into something quieter, a drydown of white musk and lingering coolness that stays close to the skin. The rhubarb and lychee ghost in and out for hours, keeping the whole thing from ever feeling static. What survives to the end is that clean, slightly cold iris signature, powdery and green, still twitching with faint ginger long after the citrus has gone quiet.
