The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
War and Peace III Attar emerged from Areej Le Doré's 2025 Classic Collection, conceived by the house's founder-distiller Russian Adam. Building on the brand's 2017 Indonesian roots and its devotion to pure oud and sandalwood, the perfumer sought a scent that would echo the paradox of its name. The reference to Tolstoy's epic is deliberate. This is a fragrance of contrasts, where warm amber and soft florals meet deep, almost aggressive animalics. Russian Adam has built his reputation on understanding how precious oils interact when combined with intention, and the 2025 release showcases this philosophy through its rich amber opening and complex animalic drydown.
Russian Adam's approach to War and Peace III reflects a philosophy where natural materials speak for themselves. The amber used in the opening is chosen for its warmth and resinous quality, setting up the contrasts that follow. The heart of patchouli, iris, and rose is designed to create an interesting dialogue between earthy depth and floral elegance. This pairing is deliberate, allowing each material to enhance the others while maintaining distinct character. The drydown's animalics and oud represent the ultimate expression of the attar's luxury, materials that have been prized in perfumery for their complexity and depth.
The evolution
The scent journey begins with amber's golden warmth, immediately establishing a sense of occasion. Within minutes, patchouli emerges with its earthy, slightly bitter character, creating an interesting tension with the sweetness of the opening. Iris follows, adding a powdery, almost metallic elegance that lifts the composition. Rose enters softly, tempering the earthiness with romantic softness. As the heart matures, the true depth of the fragrance becomes apparent. The drydown introduces Siberian deer musk, ambergris, and oud, materials that require time to fully reveal themselves. Castoreum and civet add their characteristic animalic warmth while vetiver and oakmoss ground the composition with natural, earthy depth. Amber persists throughout, tying the entire evolution together with its warm, resinous presence.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 debut, War and Peace III Attar has become a cultural touchstone within the niche perfume community, symbolising a resurgence of traditional attar craftsmanship blended with modern boldness. Collectors cite its fossilised amber opening as a nod to historic Middle Eastern fragrance rituals, while its daring use of raw oud and animalic notes challenges contemporary Western preferences. The scent has sparked discussions on sustainability, as the sourcing of deer musk and civet aligns with ethical sourcing debates, influencing emerging brands to consider transparent ingredient provenance.
