The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Solar Essay arrived in 2023 as part of And Other Stories' growing scent wardrobe, composed by Jérôme Epinette. The name reads like a chapter heading, and the composition reads like the chapter: bright on the surface, softer underneath. Epinette has worked with creamy tropical materials throughout his career, and here those materials find their quietest expression yet. The H&M Group label has been expanding its fragrance line steadily, adding pieces that feel considered and wearable rather than trend-chasing. Solar Essay fits that mold, a summer-leaning scent built on warmth rather than tropical cliché, more about golden light than white sand. The bottle itself carries the same restraint, clean lines, a warm amber juice, nothing ornamental.
What makes the structure interesting is the tension between its top and its center. Lemon and coconut open together, a pairing that reads on skin as bright citrus lifted by cool, watery sweetness rather than full dessert. The lemon has a sharp, almost green character that keeps the coconut from sinking into something heavy, giving the opening its lifted, luminous quality. Then mimosa and tiare take over, both of them milky-yellow florals that carry the cream without adding sugar.
The evolution
The opening lands fast and loud, a sharp lemon zest cut against cold coconut flesh, almost like the first sip of something iced. Within fifteen minutes the citrus pulls away and the coconut settles into something rounder, creamier, joined by the soft yellow flutter of mimosa. By the forty-minute mark the tiare has arrived properly, that warm, almost-buttery waxy flower that gives the composition its lazy afternoon weight. Cyclamen hums underneath, a wet-stone freshness that keeps the florals from going dense. Two hours in, the tonka bean starts showing up, a soft warm haze that smells like the last thirty minutes of a sunset, golden and a little resinous, like sun-warmed wood. The cedarwood arrives last and stays longest, a clean wood that holds everything together rather than dominating, offering a quiet backbone that keeps the composition grounded.
Cultural impact
Solar Essay has found its audience among wearers looking for a warm-weather scent that delivers mood without excess, the kind of composition that earns repeat wearing through gentle satisfaction rather than loud performance. It's a daytime, warm-weather scent for someone who wants the feeling of vacation without the sweetness of a typical tropical fragrance, a piece that reads as luminous and editorial in equal measure.
