The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Avant-Garde Air arrived in 2019 as part of And Other Stories' growing perfume oil lineup. The scent sits in a curious place. The name suggests something experimental, almost architectural, but what comes out of the bottle plays it cool. It reads more like an exhale than a statement. Less about avant-garde as provocation, more about air with a little weight behind it. There's something deliberately quiet about the way this one presents itself, a softness that doesn't demand attention but rewards it once you lean in. The opening has a translucent quality, almost like looking through frosted glass, where individual notes blur into a single wash of light rather than standing apart.
What makes the structure worth looking at is the collision between the powdery iris in the middle and the brown sugar in the base. Iris on its own can read cold, almost aloof. Add brown sugar and vanilla cream underneath and the whole composition warms up from the inside, like a room that was too bright until someone closed the curtains. The peach in the opening doesn't just add fruit, either. It bridges the juicy mandarin and the floral heart so the transition feels inevitable rather than abrupt. Patchouli anchors everything without leaning earthy in an obvious way.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to the fruit. Freesia and mandarin hit bright, with peach giving it a fuzzy, slightly sticky edge that softens any sharpness. That opening trio feels generous and immediate, almost juicy in the way it lands on skin, the freesia lending a cool peppery lift while the mandarin keeps everything fizzy and awake. Then iris takes the wheel. It doesn't shout. It just moves in, cool and powdery, with pear blossom adding a green-wet lift that keeps the florals from collapsing into soap. The iris here reads more like suede than rooty earth, dry and refined, and the pear blossom weaves through it like a thread of cool water, preventing the powder from settling too flat. The heart holds for a good stretch, maybe 2-3 hours, depending on skin.
Cultural impact
Avant-Garde Air Perfume Oil occupies a particular kind of territory in fragrance right now. The freesia, mandarin, and peach accord reads as a study in softness, the kind of clean, sheer floral that feels comfortable on a wide range of skin without flattening into something generic. There's a translucence to the way these notes interact, each one giving the others room rather than competing for attention. The oil format itself shapes the experience in ways a spray can't quite match. Applied close to the skin, the fragrance warms gradually, releasing its character slowly as body heat does the work of diffusing it.
