The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alfred Dunhill's Signature Collection draws from the great trade routes, and Moroccan Amber takes its name from one of the most storied. The scent captures an olfactory memory of warmth, richness, and exchange, rather than a literal translation of place. Gino Percontino composed this in 2019, working with amber as the guiding note, building a fragrance that honors the spirit of exchange that defined the historic routes where cultures met and goods traveled. Not a literal translation of place, but an evocative memory that speaks to the sensory richness of those storied pathways.
What makes this composition interesting is how it handles the tension between warmth and dryness. The top opens with fresh spice, black pepper, ginger, cardamom, sharp enough to cut through. Then the heart introduces hazelnut and saffron, a combination that feels almost edible, almost sweet. But the base refuses to let you forget where you are: leather, oud, and amber together create something dry, animalic, and decidedly masculine. It's that hand-off, from brightness to richness to darkness, that makes the fragrance worth knowing.
The evolution
The opening doesn't linger. Within fifteen minutes, the ginger and coriander recede, replaced by something softer, hazelnut at the forefront, its roasted, slightly sweet quality taking center stage. The saffron arrives quietly, threading warmth through the composition without overwhelming it. By the second hour, the top notes have fully surrendered and the heart owns the stage. Then leather begins to show itself, dry at first, almost dusty, before the oud and amber build a foundation that's warm and animalic. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its keep: the base notes create a lingering presence that projects moderately, close enough to notice, far enough to intrigue, staying close to the skin as it evolves throughout the wearing experience.
Cultural impact
Moroccan Amber sits comfortably in the Signature Collection alongside pieces like Amalfi Citrus and Valensole Lavender, each fragrance a considered take on a specific place or idea rather than a trend-driven release. The warm, spicy oriental character makes it suitable for those who appreciate sophistication without loudness. The hazelnut-saffron heart adds a distinctive quality, creating a fragrance that is warm and complex enough to be memorable, restrained enough to be wearable daily. It occupies a specific space: warm and complex enough to be memorable, restrained enough to be wearable daily.
