The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
OUT WEST P.M arrived in 2026, and Pascal Gaurin, the perfumer behind the composition, built it around a tension the brand has explored before but never quite this directly: heat meeting residue, the moment a fire becomes aftermath. The "Living Gunsmoke" accord at its heart is the thesis statement, a deliberate reconstruction of combustion rather than a polite suggestion of it. Gaurin treats smoke as a living material, something that moves, shifts, and settles across the hours rather than a static note you simply smell once and forget. The composition reads as an evening composition, a scent built for after-dark hours when the landscape cools and the last light turns copper at the horizon.
The genius is in the accord name itself, "Living Gunsmoke." The accord sits between labdanum's animalic warmth and patchouli, a layered construction that behaves less like a single ingredient and more like a small ecosystem on skin. It occupies a register between campfire and spent firework, and it refuses to behave like a background note, instead demanding attention at the center of the composition. Surrounding it, lavender and grapefruit at the top provide an almost aggressive brightness that initially reads as a clean, aromatic introduction before the smoke overtakes the conversation.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a bit of a trick. Lavender and grapefruit hit bright, almost cologne-like, and there's a moment where you might think this is going to be a fresh, easygoing composition. Then the saffron arrives, dry and leathery, and everything starts to shift. By the thirty-minute mark, the "Living Gunsmoke" accord has taken over, and the lavender has been absorbed into something more ambiguous, part aromatic, part scorched. This is the heart, and it lasts a long time, the smoke layered with labdanum's warm, almost sweet resin. The patchouli underneath keeps it from going too dark, offering a dry, earthy counterweight to the denser smoke. As hours pass, the smoke softens but never fully disappears. It becomes more atmospheric, less direct, hovering at the edge of perception like a lingering presence in a room.
Cultural impact
OUT WEST P.M stands as one of the more uncompromising smoke-forward compositions in recent years. The "Living Gunsmoke" accord is a specific, deliberate choice that will resonate strongly with wearers drawn to weight, atmosphere, and intensity. The fragrance wears as a scent of someone comfortable with darkness, a composition that gravitates toward mood and presence rather than brightness and easy accessibility. It is part of Alchemist's growing OUT WEST universe, which builds multiple compositions around a single overarching concept, allowing the brand to explore a shared territory from different angles.
