The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Luban, the Arabic word for frankincense, carries the weight of ancient trade routes and desert ritual. The perfumer approached Luban as a study in contrast: taking the resinous, ceremonial history of frankincense and making it personal. The result is an oriental woody fragrance that introduces frankincense in a sensual, intimate way, not the monumental incense of grand spaces, but the warmth held close to skin. There is a quiet intensity here, a reverence for tradition transformed into something you can wear, something that breathes with you throughout the day. The composition draws on heritage ingredients blended into contemporary forms, honoring the past while speaking clearly to the present.
The real tension lives in the top notes. Fruity sweetness meets warm spice without the safety of a predictable oriental structure. Pink pepper and saffron create an unexpected pairing, sharp and aromatic against a backdrop of deeper resinous notes. These elements don't arrive immediately; they linger, giving Luban a modernity that traditional oriental compositions rarely attempt. The base provides the warmth expected from the genre, but cedar keeps it from becoming heavy.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with pink pepper's sharp warmth and saffron's honeyed spice. Orange oil adds a clean citrus brightness that prevents the composition from becoming heavy. The heart takes its time. Olibanum, violet, elemi, and juniper don't burst in, they arrive gradually, weaving through the fading brightness like a conversation finding its real subject. The drydown is where Luban earns its name. Cedar, musk, and amberwood arrive together, warm and resinous, grounded by woody depth. On fabric especially, the base notes linger, warm, intimate, still present hours later. The fragrance evolves throughout the day, each stage revealing new facets while maintaining an underlying coherence.
Cultural impact
Luban fits Adleen Haute Parfumerie's established identity, the house built its reputation on bridging Arabian heritage with contemporary perfumery technique, and Luban continues that conversation. The release positions frankincense at the center of something warmer and more approachable than traditional oriental compositions, using violet and elemi to soften the material's historical intensity. Luban feels like an invitation, an open door into a world of rich olfactory tradition reimagined for modern wear.
