The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nejla Barbir composed this scent in 2020 with a clear intention: create a fruity-floral. The brief was simple on paper, harder to execute. The tartness of raspberry and mandarin cuts through the softer berry sweetness, keeping things balanced and honest. The composition requires careful calibration to achieve this effect, but the result is a fragrance that sounds straightforward while demanding considerable skill to perfect. Each note plays its part in creating something that invites you to lean in closer.
What makes Trafalga interesting is the interplay between tart and sweet, two forces that usually pull in opposite directions. The raspberry brings a clean acidity, bright enough to wake up the composition. Mandarin orange sharpens it further, preventing the strawberry and cherry from becoming too soft or syrupy. Then the heart arrives: blackcurrant and grapefruit. The blackcurrant adds depth without heaviness, while the grapefruit keeps everything honest. There's no point in this fragrance where sweetness wins completely. Even the base, musk and patchouli, stays quiet, adding warmth without weight. It's a balanced fruity-floral in a category that often sacrifices nuance for immediate impact.
The evolution
Trafalga opens bright. Raspberry and mandarin orange arrive together, their tartness sharp enough to catch attention without overwhelming. Strawberry softens the edges just enough to keep it from being harsh. Twenty minutes in, the heart takes over. Blackcurrant and grapefruit arrive, the grapefruit adding a clean, slightly bitter edge that balances the sweetness. It's controlled, feminine, and never loud. By the third hour, the drydown settles. Musk and patchouli create a quiet warmth that's skin-close, never projecting far. Eight to ten hours of wear, and the fragrance never once tried to fill the room. That's the point. You have to lean in to find it.
Cultural impact
Trafalga occupies a specific corner of the fruity-floral category, more intentional than its peers. The composition sets it apart from typical berry fragrances, offering a more considered take on the genre. Moderate sillage and practical longevity make it suitable for daily wear, particularly in spring and fall when the fruity notes feel most natural. It's the kind of fragrance that rewards those who notice the details.
