    Nejla Barbir

Nejla Barbir arrived in Paris at eighteen, trading the Mediterranean sun for the bustling ateliers of the French capital. She earned a doctorate in chemistry before stepping into the fragrance world in 1987, when Flora Synth invited her to join its perfumery team. Under the mentorship of Jean‑Claude Ellena and other seasoned noses, she learned to balance scientific rigor with artistic instinct. By the early 1990s she earned senior status, guiding projects for niche houses and luxury brands. Her breakthrough arrived with the Harold & Maude collection, where she translated literary moods into scent, earning critical praise and cementing her reputation as a versatile creator. Today she balances consultancy work with teaching, sharing her blend of analytical precision and intuitive flair to a new generation of noses.

    The signature

    How Nejla composes

Barbir favors a structured approach, building compositions layer by layer. She often starts with a clear mineral or aromatic anchor, then weaves in floral or resinous heart notes that add depth. Her signatures include crisp citrus, luminous aldehydes, and warm ambergris, balanced by occasional spice or oud for contrast. She prefers natural extracts when they offer authenticity, but she does not shy away from synthetics that provide stability or a unique twist. The result is a scent that feels both precise and alive, inviting the wearer to explore its evolving facets.

    Philosophy

    What drives Nejla

Barbir treats each brief as a puzzle, seeking the hidden emotion that the client wishes to convey. She believes that scent should echo memory without reproducing it, allowing the wearer to fill the gaps with personal experience. Chemistry provides the foundation, but intuition decides the direction. She respects tradition yet refuses to be bound by it, constantly probing the border between familiar accords and unexpected twists. For her, fragrance is a dialogue between the skin and the surrounding world, a subtle conversation that unfolds over hours.
