The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name comes first. Above and Beyond, not a place, but a direction. A13 built its catalog on states of experience: open versus closed, morning versus night, within versus beyond. Flavius Calaj designed this fragrance as an answer to something most leather compositions avoid: the moment of arrival. Leather is often a settling, it waits, it softens, it arrives quietly. This one starts loud. Saffron and pink pepper hit first, unapologetic, the olfactory equivalent of a door opening wide. The leather doesn't emerge to calm things down. It arrives to claim them. Calaj's architecture is simple: give the wearer a moment of undeniable presence, then give them the composure to stay there.
The heart of the composition is where craft shows up. Lavender is unexpected here, it's rarely paired with oud and leather without leaning too far into barbershop territory. But Calaj uses it differently. The lavender doesn't soften the leather; it lifts it, giving the composition a slightly mineral quality that keeps the leather from becoming heavy or animalic in the wrong way. Iris does the quiet work of powdering the edges, adding a refinement that stops the whole thing from feeling too much. By the time the base notes arrive, sandalwood, oud, patchouli, the fragrance has completed its transformation from challenge to composure. This is the arc: bold, then beautiful, then lasting.
The evolution
The opening lingers with unexpected patience. Saffron and pink pepper arrive with real insistence, this is not a fragrance that rushes to its heart. Incense drifts through, adding smoke without darkness, keeping the top notes from feeling harsh. The spiced warmth of pink pepper mingles with the metallic edge of saffron, creating an opening that feels both vibrant and grounded. Then, almost without warning, leather arrives. Smooth, almost warm, like well-maintained leather in an older car on a cool morning. Cedar follows, its woody depth complementing the leather's softness, then the lavender kicks in, and for a brief window the fragrance smells like something between masculine and floral, powdery, green, unexpectedly soft. The drydown is where Above and Beyond earns its name. Oud anchors everything, deep and resinous, while sandalwood and patchouli spread warmth across the skin.
Cultural impact
Above and Beyond entered a niche leather market already populated by established compositions, but its saffron-led opening set it apart from the first spray. The warm-spicy-leathery accord is distinctive, with saffron bringing a metallic, almost medicinal edge that cuts through the leather's warmth. Pink pepper adds a subtle sparkle that prevents the opening from feeling heavy. As the fragrance develops, the leather softens and reveals more of its creamy side, while incense smoke drifts through in the background.
