The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Geza Schön designed this one for the 2019 Acqua Colonia Intense collection. The result is a walk through Scandinavian forest at dawn, not a beach, not a garden, but pine trees and cold air and the kind of clarity that makes you feel awake before you've opened your eyes. Schön reached for fir absolute and frankincense, materials that anchor the fragrance in resinous warmth. The structure is built around these woods, with citrus and herbs lifting the top while the base settles into deep, enveloping forest character. The fragrance honors the house's lightness while taking on a more grounded, contemplative quality than the original line. Wakening Woods. The name says it all.
The combination of fir, frankincense, and osmanthus is unusual for a brand built on citrus clarity. Fir absolute brings that green, slightly resinous pine note, not the dry twigs of masculine fougères, but the living tree, bark and needles and sap. Frankincense adds a smoky, meditative quality that deepens as the fragrance settles. And osmanthus, often used in Chinese perfumery for its tea-like, apricot character, appears in the heart to add unexpected softness, a plummy sweetness that bridges the spicy opening to the woody base. Together, these materials create something that feels both natural and carefully composed.
The evolution
The opening announces itself in a sharp, aromatic burst that feels like cold air hitting warm skin, with bergamot, coriander, and pink pepper arriving together. This is the freshest phase, the most immediately recognizable as 4711. The coriander adds an herbal lift that keeps the bergamot from becoming sweet; the pink pepper adds just enough warmth to suggest that this freshness has depth. Rose and jasmine arrive in the heart, softening the sharpness with something almost creamy. The osmanthus makes itself known as a sweetness that contrasts with the conifer backbone rather than fighting it. By the second hour, the base takes over: fir, frankincense, patchouli forming a resinous, meditative combination. The drydown is the payoff, the forest air after the initial cold, warm and still and close.
Cultural impact
Since its launch, this fragrance has found its audience among those who want the Scandinavian forest atmosphere without heaviness. The rose note in the heart brings a distinctive character that defines much of the fragrance's personality, adding complexity and depth to the overall composition. The value is difficult to argue with for anyone seeking this particular balance of fresh and woody elements.
