    The Story of Oat

Oat extract brings a warm, nutty, and reassuringly comforting character to fine fragrances. This grain-derived note evokes freshly harvested fields and creamy oat milk, offering a softness that balances brighter elements and adds emotional depth to compositions.

    Heritage

Oats rank among humanity's oldest cultivated grains, with evidence of domestication dating to Bronze Age Europe around 3000 BCE. While wheat and barley dominated ancient agriculture, oats served primarily as medicinal and ritual preparations. Greek physicians prescribed oat-based poultices and baths. In medieval Europe, oat Straw featured in fragrant sachets placed in linens. Commercial oat absolute emerged in the 20th century as perfumers sought comforting, skin-friendly materials. Today oats appear in skin care and fine fragrance for their universally appealing warmth, particularly in gender-neutral and comfort-forward compositions.

    Production

    How Oat Is Made

Oat extract for perfumery is typically obtained through CO2 supercritical extraction or solvent extraction of the oat straw and grain. The CO2 method preserves delicate aromatic compounds while yielding a more natural olfactory profile. After harvest, the oat straw is dried and ground before extraction. The resulting extract contains volatile fatty acids, coumarins, and phenolic compounds that contribute its characteristic warm, cereal-like scent with creamy undertones. Fractional distillation may follow to isolate specific aromatic fractions for different fragrance concentrations.
