The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Marc Zini designed SRPLS FRGRNC/01 for Zara, released in 2019 as part of the brand's ongoing fragrance partnership. The brief was straightforward: a woody-spicy composition that could sit close to the skin without fighting for attention. Pink pepper and guaiac wood formed the structural spine, bright enough to open, grounded enough to last. Musk and amber finished the arc with warmth that felt less composed than lived-in.
What makes this structure work is the restraint. Pink pepper doesn't shout, it introduces. Guaiac wood doesn't dominate, it deepens. Together they create a tension between cool spice and warm wood that holds through the heart. The base amplifies that tension: musk adds a skin-like quality, amber adds sweetness that never tips into sugar. It's the kind of layering that reads as effortless rather than engineered.
The evolution
The opening arrives clean and spicy. Pink pepper announces itself for the first minutes, bright and slightly sharp, before the spices settle and something warmer begins to emerge. The heart takes over around the five-minute mark, guaiac wood, smoky and resinous, replacing the initial brightness with a close, intimate warmth. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its reputation. Musk and amber arrive late, wrapping the guaiac wood in something that reads as skin-warm and honeyed. Three to four hours on most skin types. The sillage stays intimate throughout, you'll smell it. The room won't. On fabric, the amber lingers quietly into the next day, a warm reminder that something good happened.
Cultural impact
Zara fragrances occupy a specific niche: the design-literate consumer who wants contemporary style without heritage pricing. SRPLS FRGRNC/01 has drawn comparisons to Le Labo Gaiac 10, not for similarity, but for shared minimalism. Both fragrances favor restraint over projection, inviting proximity rather than demanding attention. Where they differ is in ambition: Le Labo's version is a statement piece; Zara's is a quiet daily wear.
