Nocturne

Silver birch brings a pale, papery coolness at the top, while burley tobacco and bourbon vanilla anchor the base in something darker and more resinous. Blackcurrant runs through the heart alongside clove, its dark fruit presence weaving between the spiced warmth and the wood smoke above. Clove adds a dry, almost medicinal heat that keeps the composition from sliding into pure smoke. The extrait concentration gives the materials room to develop at their own pace, each note arriving and departing on its own schedule.

The evolution

The opening is surprisingly clean. Jasmine sambac and mandarin arrive briefly, almost politely, then silver birch steps forward and the temperature drops. The birch takes on a leathered quality, less white bark and more old book cover, and the blackcurrant shows up underneath with a tart, almost mentholated brightness that keeps the top from going too austere. As the hours pass, clove absolute settles in alongside cedarwood, and the whole thing warms up considerably. This is where Nocturne finds its stride: the smoky birch and the spiced heart negotiating something neither could achieve alone. The drydown belongs to tobacco, benzoin, and bourbon vanilla, with labdanum and Vanuatu sandalwood giving the base a rounded, slightly sweet weight. What's left on skin is a low hum of vanilla-touched tobacco with a faint cedar echo.
