The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gold I arrived in 2016 as the opening statement of Widian's Gold Collection, created by founder Ali Aljaberi alongside the French perfumer Jean-Claude Astier. The fragrance draws inspiration from the markets where oud, amber, and aromatic resins once changed hands, connecting traditions from East and West. Sourcing rare Arabian raw materials was central to the brief. The collaboration with Astier brought French technique together with Arabian materials, balancing structure against raw intensity. Together, they crafted a scent that speaks to both those familiar with oud and newcomers encountering it for the first time.
What makes Gold I structurally interesting is how it handles the oud-and-white-flower pairing. Oud on its own can be dense, almost medicinal. White flowers can read as delicate and fleeting. Putting them in the same heart forces a negotiation. The white flowers and oud work together to create a heart that changes character over two or three hours rather than remaining static. There is a dynamic push and pull between the two, with each element revealing something different about the other as time passes. The base does the opposite. Vanilla, musk, amber, and sandalwood arrive late and stay.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the apple. Crisp, fruity, almost confectionary, a bright entry that announces the fragrance without fully revealing what is underneath. The black pepper arrives quickly, adding a dry spice that keeps the apple from reading as purely sweet. This is the flirtation phase. Everything is present, nothing has settled. By the second hour, the oud takes over. It rises slowly, displacing the white flowers which retreat into the background. The heart becomes less floral, more resinous. The apple is largely gone unless you are looking for it. This is where the fragrance earns its name, there is a warmth to the oud here that feels substantial and radiant. The drydown is where Gold I lives longest. Vanilla and sandalwood wrap around the remaining oud, creating a creamy, warm base that stays close to the skin for hours.
Cultural impact
Widian launched Gold I as a statement piece for the Gold Collection. The fragrance embodies the brand's mission to blend Arabian perfumery traditions with modern sensibilities. Gold I represents Widian's approach to luxury fragrance that honors regional heritage while appealing to global audiences. Its oud-forward composition and warm oriental character position it as a cultural bridge in contemporary perfumery.
