The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vyrao launched Magnetic 70 in 2021, collaborating with perfumer Lyn Harris to build a fragrance around what the brand calls energetic intention. Harris structured the composition around a sequence of protective, illuminating, and grounding materials: angelica seed, black pepper, orris, incense, cedar, juniper wood, frankincense, and vetiver. The notes read like a map of emotional states, cedar for positivity, vetiver for sensuality and grounding, frankincense for illumination, angelica seed for protection. Cedar brings a dry, warm woodiness that fills the mid-palate of the fragrance, while vetiver contributes a rooty, earthy quality with just a hint of smoke. Frankincense delivers a resinous, slightly balsamic depth that lingers in the background.
What makes Magnetic 70 distinctive is the absence of sweetness in a resinous, smoky composition. The vetiver functions as a persistent undercurrent, cool, earthy, slightly smoked, running beneath the cedar and incense without ever fully surrendering to them. Its rooty, slightly bitter character keeps the composition grounded and prevents it from becoming overly diffuse. The frankincense moves quietly, more contemplative than celebratory, adding a sacred, resinous depth that enriches the overall composition without dominating it.
The evolution
The opening is green and sharp, angelica seed's camphorated bite alongside black pepper's warmth. Orris softens the edges within minutes, adding a powdery violet quality that cushions what comes next. The heart belongs to incense and cedar, smoke threading through the wood, with elemi resin adding a bright citrus note that lifts without lightening. Vetiver arrives in the drydown as cool, smoky earth. Frankincense lingers behind it. And angelica, the seed that opened everything, returns briefly, a ghost on the skin two hours in. The fragrance unfolds in distinct chapters, beginning with the sharp herbal introduction before moving into the smoky, woody heart where incense and cedar dominate. The transition between these stages feels natural rather than abrupt, with each phase lasting roughly an hour before the next emerges.
Cultural impact
Magnetic 70 arrived as part of a new approach to fragrance that positioned scents as extensions of mood rather than signature statements. The fragrance attracts wearers who appreciate dark, smoky, resinous compositions and approach fragrance as a form of personal practice. Its lack of sweetness sets it apart from more conventional offerings, appealing to those who seek depth and complexity in their scent choices. The composition has found an audience among fragrance enthusiasts who value the interplay of incense, cedar, and vetiver, and who appreciate a scent that unfolds gradually over hours rather than announcing itself immediately.
