The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rosso arrived in 2021 as part of Venti4's Edizione classica, joining the Italian house's early lineup that includes Bianco, Verde, and Vorrei. The name means what it sounds like: red. Red berries bruising under cardamom's heat. Cumin doing what cumin does, turning every other note slightly feral. The brand's own copy describes intense soft valleys and hopeless passion circling the head, images that suit a composition built on spice rather than sweetness. The construction raises a clear question: what does red smell like when you strip out the obvious gourmand cues? The answer appears to involve cumin, carnation, and a generous pour of jasmine sambac.
What's interesting here is the absence. No vanilla anchoring the base, no tonka smoothing edges, no oud providing weight. Instead benzoin does the resinous work alone, cedar and sandalwood provide dry woodiness, and the florals carry an unusual amount of structural load. Cumin and cardamom together is a heat combination most houses would soften with something sweet. Venti4 let them fight. The carnation adds a clove-adjacent warmth with a grounded quality that keeps the whole composition anchored.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with bergamot and red berries, the citrus lifting the fruit accord before the spices take their turn at the wheel. Cardamom and cumin arrive together, and the whole composition tilts warm, the berries taking on darker, cooked-fruit undertones that feel denser than the opening suggested. The jasmine sambac and ylang-ylang work their way into the midsection, bringing a fleshy, almost carnal lushness that wasn't apparent at the start. Sandalwood and cedar eventually take over the base work, while benzoin keeps tugging toward sweetness without fully committing. As the hours pass, it becomes a close-skin affair, the projection softening as the woods gain ground and the spices recede into memory. The late stages lean woody and faintly resinous, with the warmth of cumin still detectable in the background.
Cultural impact
Rosso belongs to Venti4's 2021 debut lineup alongside Bianco, Verde, and Vorrei, a grouping that gives it context as part of a complete first statement from the Italian house. It's marketed for women and men, and tends to see more wear in winter and fall, when its spice-forward profile has the right kind of atmospheric weight. Cumin and carnation carry a lot of the composition's character, notes that typically play supporting roles in mainstream perfumery but take on structural importance here. The fragrance sits in the spicy-floral niche category, where the interplay between warm spices and white florals defines the style.
