The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alice Le Berre composed Sunbeds and Daydreams for twentysecondofmay with a specific sensory goal in mind. The brand, founded by Berlin art curators Luisa Grassl and Morgan Fassbender, works in limited runs to capture specific moments in scent form. This fragrance began as an attempt to bottle the golden hour pause, that exact instant when sun warmth meets ocean breezes. Le Berre translated that feeling into a structure that starts bright and fruit-forward before softening into warmth, mirroring the way late afternoon light feels both crisp and gentle at the same time.
The note choices reflect a deliberate philosophy about how warmth and water interact in memory. Solar notes were chosen because actual sunlight does not smell like citrus or tropical fruits but rather like a quality of light and heat. Pear bridges the gap between freshness and sweetness, avoiding the pitfall of making a sunny fragrance smell like candy. The honey in the heart grounds the composition without making it feel edible, while jasmine provides the clean floral lift that prevents the aquatic notes from smelling clinical.
The evolution
The composition opens on a duo of crisp pear and radiant solar notes that immediately establish a warm, luminous character. As the top notes soften, aquatic notes and honey emerge in the heart, supported by jasmine that adds a clean floral dimension without tipping into indolic territory. The transition feels organic rather than abrupt because the solar notes of the opening gradually blend into the honey-warmed aquatic heart. The drydown introduces musk and ambroxan as primary skin-scent elements, with amber adding subtle resinous warmth and cashmere wood contributing a creamy, slightly sweet woodiness. A trace of oud remains present but restrained, ensuring the base retains its intimate, skin-close quality rather than becoming heavy or dark. Each phase builds from the previous one, creating a continuous arc rather than a series of distinct stages.
Cultural impact
Wearers describe the scent as a sun‑kissed beach day that feels both fresh and comforting. It’s often mentioned alongside Erba Pura and Kirkè, becoming a quiet summer staple among collectors who appreciate its balanced sweet‑salty character. Its popularity has sparked numerous online discussions and inspired limited‑edition collaborations, cementing its role as a cultural touchstone for summer fragrance enthusiasts.
