The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tous began as a jewelry house in Catalonia in 1920, founded on the belief that precious materials should be within reach, not locked behind velvet ropes. The brand carried this accessible approach into fragrance, treating scent as jewelry for the skin, something worn daily rather than saved for special occasions. LoveMe The Onyx Parfum arrived in 2021 as part of the ongoing LoveMe collection, composed by Domitille Michalon-Bertier and Christian Alori around hazelnut, grapefruit, and peony. A deliberately soft opening for a collection that trades in warmth over volume. The Onyx name brings something unusual to the LoveMe lineup, suggesting depth and richness in the drydown that balances the brightness of the top notes.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of restraint over power. Hazelnut in an opening is unusual, and it works here because the surrounding notes give it room to breathe without crowding. Peony and heliotrope prevent the heart from becoming too dense, while vanilla and sandalwood in the drydown provide warmth without sweetness that overwhelms. Vetiver grounds the blend, ensuring the drydown feels grounded rather than floaty. The pairing of hazelnut with vanilla is classic for a reason, and the supporting florals keep it from feeling too dessert-like. Heliotrope adds that powdery quality that makes florals feel approachable rather than sharp. Every note earns its place. Nothing is there by accident.
The evolution
The opening burst of hazelnut is immediate and tangible, its roasted, buttery quality making the fragrance feel warm from the first spray. Grapefruit fades quickly, providing only a brief flash of citrus before the real warmth arrives. Peony softens the transition, its delicate floral note preventing the hazelnut from feeling heavy. As the heart takes over, hazelnut carries forward into the mid-phase, joined by heliotrope which adds a powdery, almost almond-like softness. Black orchid grounds the heart with a rich, dark floral character without tipping into heaviness. The drydown unfolds gradually over hours. Sandalwood and vanilla emerge together, creating a creamy warmth that stays close to the skin. Vetiver adds a subtle earthiness that prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying. The overall arc moves from bright and floral through a warm, nutty center and into an intimate, creamy finish that rewards patience.
Cultural impact
LoveMe The Onyx Parfum arrived in 2021 from Spanish jewelry house Tous, positioning the scent within their LoveMe collection. The fragrance finds its place in a market that has increasingly valued intimacy and personal presence over projection. Within the LoveMe collection, this scent represents a deliberate choice toward warmth and emotional connection. It's the kind of fragrance that works best when worn close to the skin, where it can unfold gradually rather than announce itself.
