The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vert d'Encens arrived in 2016 as part of a rare focused release from Tom Ford's Private Blend line. That year, the house introduced four new interpretations of green perfumery simultaneously, Vert d'Encens, Vert de Bois, Vert Bohème, and Vert de Fleur, each taking a distinct angle on the theme. Vert d'Encens was conceived as an olfactory portrait of the Corsican coastline. The composition centers on a dialogue between resinous conifer and aromatic herbs, creating a green scent that feels both structured and natural. There's a meditative quality to how the notes unfold, with the incense lending an almost spiritual dimension that elevates the green structure beyond typical aromatic fragrances.
The fragrance opens before slowly revealing its depth, a quality that distinguishes it within the Private Blend range. Heliotrope and fir balsam gradually introduce warmth as the initial sharpness fades, creating a nuanced evolution that rewards continued attention. The coniferous structure gains dimension through the interplay of herbal and balsamic elements, preventing the composition from becoming static. Incense weaves through the base, adding complexity without dominating the green character. It's a composition that rewards patience, both in development and in wearing.
The evolution
The opening introduces fir and frankincense alongside bergamot and basil, creating a complex entry point before the conifer and incense backbone takes full hold. The heart accord brings heliotrope and wood resin into the composition, blending with the green quality that persists throughout. As the fragrance develops, the green character becomes more pronounced and takes on a smoky quality. The base is anchored by fir balsam and wood resin, giving the scent structure and longevity. This layered progression unfolds gradually, rewarding those who pay attention to how the fragrance evolves on the skin.
Cultural impact
Vert d'Encens earned the Fragrance of the Year Men's Luxury award in 2017, a year after its introduction to the collection. The green and incense combination creates a distinctive character that sets it apart within the Tom Ford range. Wearers have found it to be a memorable addition to the Private Blend line, with the interplay of herbal freshness and smoky depth offering something unique among green fragrances.
