White Leather N°17 arrived in 2015 as part of The Master Perfumer's numbered catalogue, a system that names compositions by their primary accord rather than building mythology around them. The house operates with a clear philosophy: each numbered release is a focused work rather than a sprawling concept, and the numbers themselves become the reference point. White Leather N°17 is a study in the territory suggested by its title, an exercise in restraint where the materials are left to speak without ornament. The leather sits forward from the first spray, dry and slightly cool, with a surface that feels closer to untreated hide than to anything polished. Incense curls in alongside it, adding smoke and a faint resinous sweetness that never tips into the sugary.
What's unusual here is the restraint of the structure. Leather, incense, and vetiver form a tight triangle where each material pushes the other toward something rougher. The incense brings smoke and resinous weight, settling into the leather's grain rather than sitting on top of it. The vetiver grounds everything with its earthy, mineral edge, adding a cool root-like quality that keeps the warmth in check. Together they create a leather accord that reads more like working hide than polished upholstery, the scent of material before it was dressed up for sale.
The evolution
The opening arrives with immediate smoke, frankincense lifting the leather like heat off a forge. The initial impression is dense and atmospheric, the cured-hide character of the leather blending almost seamlessly with the resinous lift of the incense. The vetiver emerges gradually, threading through with an earthy coolness that cuts the warmth without softening it. As the composition settles, the leather shifts into something closer to worn suede, still present but quieter, and the frankincense retreats into a resinous hum that sits just beneath the surface. The vetiver carries the final stretch of wear, a dry mineral warmth that lingers on skin well into the evening, with that root-like coolness slowly taking over from the earlier smoke.

White Leather N°17 is a smoke-and-hide composition that wears its materials openly, asking nothing of the wearer except patience. The drydown rewards close attention, with the leather and incense continuing to trade places well past the opening phase. It reads more like a material exercise than a commercial product, closer in spirit to artisan leather workshops than department-counter launches, where the appeal lies in the honesty of the raw materials.
