The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sanctuary launched in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, paired with the Dua Designer Line collection. This one pulls from the same DNA as Amouage's Enclave: a dense, resinous, green-spiced leather that reads less like cologne and more like atmosphere. It's a composition most people only experience through reviews and admiration, now rebuilt for a bottle anyone can actually hold. The scent opens with a bright snap of mint layered against cardamom and cinnamon, where the cool and the warm keep each other in constant negotiation. The green-spiced character announces itself early, and the leather underneath feels less like a material than a texture pressed directly into the air.
What makes Sanctuary worth studying isn't the leather, it's the architecture around it. Cardamom, cinnamon, and pink pepper form a metallic warmth on top, the spices catching light like polished copper. Then patchouli and vetiver create a green undertow that pulls everything downward, a wet-rooted darkness that anchors the composition. The base is where it gets interesting. Amber Xtreme sits next to frankincense and labdanum, and the contrast between the two resin materials gives the drydown its particular depth.
The evolution
The opening is a controlled exchange. Mint cools the top while cardamom and cinnamon generate heat underneath, and the combination reads green, almost medicinal, before the leather shows up. Leather doesn't announce itself with smoke or saddle. It stings, a quick bright bite that quickly settles into something denser. Then it melds with patchouli into a composition that smells closer to oud than actual oud, a resinous weight that sits close to the skin for hours. As the hours pass, labdanum softens everything. The sharpness fades, replaced by a velvety warmth. What's left is amber Xtreme and frankincense, still warm, still substantial, still noticeable in the air around you. The transition from opening to heart to base happens gradually, each phase revealing a new layer of the composition. On fabric the next morning, it's frankincense and a whisper of leather. Clean, dry, tenacious.
Cultural impact
Sanctuary gets compared to its named inspiration frequently, and the conversation usually centers on how close it gets and whether that closeness is the point or the limitation. Within fragrance discussion forums, reviewers and wearers have dissected the composition in detail, comparing note structures, longevity, and projection against the original. The debates tend to focus on specific elements: whether the leather reads as authentic, how the spice accord compares in warmth and brightness, and whether the drydown captures the same depth as the source material.
