The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahsam Raza composed Leather of the Complex for The Dua Brand in 2021, and the name tells you exactly what the brief was. The inspiration came from a desire for texture and contradiction in a category that often settles for the obvious, something that asks a second question on the skin rather than the first. He didn't want a leather that announced itself and left; he wanted one that kept you leaning in. The starting point was a deep, smoky leather accord, then the challenge of surrounding it without flattening it. The notes do the heavy lifting here. Oud, resin, orris root, and musk each play a distinct role in giving the leather its architecture, lending darkness, weight, coolness, and length.
What makes this composition worth attention is how orris root and oud negotiate the same space. Orris brings that cool, violet-tinged powderiness, a note that carries the chill of cold marble and the softness of expensive face powder against the skin. Oud brings heat, resin, animal warmth. They shouldn't coexist gracefully, and yet here they do, because the leather underneath gives them both something to argue over and a shared ground to stand on. The resin content matters too.
The evolution
The opening moves quickly, green and sharp, the kind of entry that catches your attention before you can name what you're smelling. Within the first stretch the suede character starts to surface, warm and slightly dry, the texture of leather that has been handled enough to lose its stiffness. It's not polished, and that's the point. As the composition develops, the oud claims its territory. It doesn't roar; it smolders, bringing a resinous sweetness underneath the leather that keeps everything from feeling austere. This phase tends to hold the longest in the wear, the part where the composition shows its depth and earns its character. The orris arrives more quietly, a cool powdery whisper cutting through the warmth at the right moment, a counterweight that makes the whole thing feel considered rather than heavy-handed. The powder keeps the smoke honest. The drydown belongs to the musk.
Cultural impact
Leather of the Complex sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, where the fragrance appears on lists alongside similar leather compositions from both established and emerging houses. Among the fragrances cited in the same conversation is Boadicea The Victorious's Intricate, a leather composition that has earned its own following in the niche space. The Dua Brand's entry reads as a darker take, leather over oud and resin, holding its own against compositions from higher-priced houses while staying within its own lane.
