The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Historic Leather arrived in 2019 from The Dua Brand. Perfumer Mahsam Raza composed it as part of the Inspired Expression collection. The composition reads as a clear homage to classical masculine chypres and Oriental leathers, the kind of scent profiles that defined an older era of perfumery. But where those references tend toward darkness and smoke, Raza tilts the balance toward a warmer, sweeter register. The result is a leather that feels less like a museum piece and more like a well-worn heirloom, familiar enough to recognize but reshaped enough to feel current. There's a generosity in the way the composition handles its material, treating leather as a texture to be embedded rather than a headline to be shouted.
What's interesting here is the tension between the listed notes. Leather sits in the heart rather than dominating from the top, which is unusual for the genre. Historic Leather opens with Italian red mandarin and rose, drops the saffron next, and only then introduces the skin-like, smoky nagarmotha beneath the leather. It reads almost inverted: the leather becomes the gravity rather than the spark. The white honey and tonka settle into the base and round the whole composition out, softening the rougher edges of the smoked root note and giving the leather a quiet, almost edible warmth.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are bright and almost cheerful. Italian red mandarin orange opens with a sharp citrus sweetness, and the rose arrives right behind it, lifting everything into a softer register. Then saffron steps in. Not sharp saffron, but the cooked, almost caramelized kind, mixed with white honey that already feels warm even on a cold wrist. As the opening fades, the leather shows up. This is nagarmotha-driven leather, smoky, root-like, almost earthy, with the nagarmotha doing most of the heavy lifting in that particular register. The Thai oud is present but restrained, more as a resinous hum than a statement, threading through the leather rather than competing with it. By the third hour, the composition has settled into a close, skin-warm drydown of tonka, vanilla, cedar, and white honey, with the leather still threading through underneath like a quiet bassline.
Cultural impact
Historic Leather sits in a specific corner of the fragrance world, working within a recognizable territory while bringing its own warmth to the table. It carries notes that will feel familiar to anyone acquainted with leather compositions, but the sweetness from the white honey and tonka softens what could otherwise read as austere. For wearers who want the texture of classical perfumery rendered in a more approachable register, it's a natural fit. The fragrance has been noted as occupying similar territory to other leather compositions, including Cuir Cavalier by Parfums MDCI, though each maintains its own distinct character.
