The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Foundation Of Sweets is a 2025 release from The Dua Brand, composed by perfumer Mahsam Raza as part of the Dua Designer Line. The fragrance takes the warmth of kunafa pastry, the snap of tempered chocolate, and the nut-butter richness of a beloved regional sweet and translates all of it into something wearable. It is a gourmand composition built around the unmistakable architecture of Middle Eastern confections, the kind that fill a table at celebration and linger in memory long after the plates are cleared. Raza's approach is direct and unapologetic. The perfume doesn't tiptoe around its subject. Every accord earns its keep, and nothing in the formula exists as filler.
The composition earns its place in the gourmand conversation from the first spray. Top notes of cocoa powder and ganache arrive immediately, raw and unapologetic, setting a chocolate foundation that reads as indulgent rather than candy-sweet. The heart then stacks caramel, hazelnut, and knafeh into a layered confection that moves beyond a single-note chocolate reading. Each ingredient pulls its weight, and the interplay between the sticky caramel and the roasted hazelnut keeps the sweetness anchored in something deeper. Then the base lands roasted almond, pistachio, honey, and vanilla.
The evolution
Cocoa powder opens the fragrance with a dry unsweetened depth that announces the composition's intentions right away. Within minutes, ganache rounds it out, melting the edges into something fudgy and warm. The opening reads almost edible, which is the point of a gourmand this direct. Then the heart unfolds. Caramel arrives sticky and slow, hazelnut adding a roasted warmth that stops the sweetness from tipping into something juvenile or cloying. Knafeh sneaks in mid-phase, a buttery slightly toasted thread that adds texture to an otherwise smooth composition and keeps the wearer leaning in for another pass. The base settles in gradually, with pistachio and roasted almond taking over to give the fragrance a nutty backbone that grounds everything above it.
Cultural impact
Foundation Of Sweets arrived in 2025, a year defined in large part by Dubai's viral chocolate moment that had taken over food feeds and dessert counters worldwide. The Dua Brand's take responds to that cultural wave directly, offering a wearable version of a treat that had become impossible to scroll past. It enters the conversation at a moment when gourmands are being taken seriously as a perfumery category, not just a novelty shelf. The fragrance's knafeh reference gives it a specificity that elevates it beyond generic sweetness, anchoring the composition in a particular cultural moment rather than a vague dessert abstraction.
