The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
#1 arrived in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, and the name reads like a statement. This is the house putting its opening card on the table. Mahsam Raza composed it, and what comes through is a confident blend of contrasting moods: classical architecture set against tropical brightness, with notes drawn from both chypre and fruit traditions working side by side. Oakmoss and orris root anchor the base, giving the scent a mossy, earthy depth that recalls old-school perfumery. Across the composition, pineapple, papaya, and green tea add tropical lift, fruit notes that catch the light without overwhelming the structure beneath them. The dual identity is the point.
What's interesting here is how many registers Raza manages to keep in conversation. Twenty notes could feel crowded, but the composition holds together because the categories complement each other rather than compete. The citrus opening (lemon, bergamot, mandarin) is sharp and brief, a handshake before the conversation starts. The tropical heart (pineapple, papaya) adds curiosity without tipping into beach-cocktail territory.
The evolution
The opening moves fast. Lemon, bergamot, and mandarin announce themselves immediately, bright and almost sharp. Pineapple and papaya flicker in and out, adding a tropical sweetness that feels deliberate rather than accidental. Cardamom and nutmeg warm the edges just enough to keep it from reading as a simple cologne splash. Soon after, the green tea and floral heart takes over. Lily of the valley, jasmine, violet, rose, and freesia create a soft, slightly powdery cloud. The orris root adds a cool, almost suede-like quality, a smooth texture that runs beneath the brighter notes. As the hours pass, the chypre base asserts itself. Sandalwood, cedar, oakmoss, and amber form a low, woody hum. The musk keeps it close to skin, wrapping the composition in something quiet and personal. Eventually it settles into a sandalwood-musk-oakmoss drydown, intimate and warm.
Cultural impact
#1 sits at an interesting crossroads in The Dua Brand's catalog. As an original composition wearing a classical name, it signals ambition. The chypre-fruit combination places it in dialogue with fragrances that bridge classical structure and contemporary brightness, appealing to wearers who want something distinctive without sacrificing approachability. For the house's audience, it reads as a confident opening move, a statement of what the brand can achieve when it steps fully into original creation rather than reinterpretation.
