The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Funky Machine arrived in 2022 from Space Fluid, a brand identified in source documentation with Markéta Maf as the listed Brand owner and Perfume maker. The earlier Narcis Nocturne release from the same house sits as part of the catalog without further editorial description needed here. The title Funky Machine reads like a description of what the bottle holds: something mechanical, slightly off-kilter, running on materials most perfumers treat as background noise rather than the main event. Markéta Maf composed it as a study in contrasts, and the note list makes that plain from the jump. Tar and rum, mango and tomato, violet leaf and castoreum.
The interesting choice here is structural in spirit. Castoreum sits alongside rose and violet, and its animalic weight arrives early and stays loud rather than hiding in the basement of the composition. Meanwhile birch tar and smoke notes do the heavy lifting in the drydown, anchoring a composition that leans sweet throughout its early life.
The evolution
The first spray reads almost edible. Mango and rum barrel out alongside a rough green streak from galbanum and basil, with coffee underneath adding a roasted bitterness that grounds the sweetness before it can fly off the handle. The violet leaf contributes a metallic, green-purple facet that sharpens the opening and keeps the fruit notes from reading as a smoothie. As the composition settles, the leather and castoreum muscle in, and the whole thing pivots from sweet-and-green to smoky-and-animalic in a way that feels deliberate rather than chaotic. The tomato note is there if you know to look for it, lending the heart a fleshy, vegetal quality that stops the composition from going pure smokehouse. The rose makes a brief appearance during this transition, adding a dewy softness that buffers the shift from green to smoky.
Cultural impact
Funky Machine sits within a growing catalog of leathery compositions that attract wearers interested in materials treated with intensity rather than diluted for mass appeal. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who treats getting dressed as a small creative act rather than a routine, a fragrance that rewards curiosity and punishes caution. Among fans of tar-heavy and animalic profiles, it reads as a 2022 entry that didn't pull its punches to court a wider audience.
