The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kiste 2022 is the second chapter of a fragrance Josh Lobb introduced in 2015. The original earned a loyal following for its honey-tobacco core and warm, resinous drydown. This version pushed further, richer, darker, smoother. The honey stayed, but Lobb deepened it with bourbon, cocoa, and rum, letting the sweetness turn golden rather than soft. Peach and honeysuckle keep the opening from tipping into heaviness. Slumberhouse doesn't issue press releases or campaign copy. The scent does the work.
What makes Kiste 2022 work is the balance between sweetness and weight. The honey note isn't delicate, it reads sticky, golden, almost syrupy. But the pipe tobacco gives it something to lean against, and the rum and bourbon keep the whole composition warm without becoming desserty. Cocoa adds a bitter edge that stops the sweetness from cloying. This is a fragrance that knows what it is and commits without apology.
The evolution
The opening arrives in layers. Tea and bourbon play off each other, the spirit's warmth against the leaf's cool astringency. Honeysuckle sweetens the introduction, and black elder brings a fleeting tartness before the florals settle. Within 30 minutes, the pipe tobacco takes over as the heart's dominant voice. The honey follows, amplifying the tobacco's presence and adding creamy, almost boozy undertones. This is where the fragrance earns its character. The drydown doesn't announce itself, it deepens. Honey becomes the dominant note, merging with amber and a faint earthy dampness from the patchouli. Vanilla and cocoa round the edges into something warm, sweet, and intimate. The sillage settles close to the skin. This is a fragrance for the end of the evening, when the projection drops but the memory of it stays.
Cultural impact
Slumberhouse occupies a singular space in the niche fragrance world. Founded by Josh Lobb in the Pacific Northwest, the house built its reputation on dense, unconventional compositions that prioritize depth over mass appeal. Kiste 2022 continues this tradition while marking a deliberate refinement of an earlier work. The original Kiste (2015) established honey and tobacco as a viable heart for serious perfumery, moving beyond the saccharine interpretations common in mainstream releases. By revisiting and darkening this foundation, the 2022 version signals an evolution within Slumberhouse's house identity.
