The beginning
Trama Nera launched in 2012, composed by Sonia Constant for Simone Cosac Profumi. The name itself translates roughly as 'dark weave' or 'black plot,' though reviewers have parsed it more evocatively as 'black influence' or 'black spots woven into the texture,' a phrase that carries more intrigue than a literal translation. Either reading lands in the same territory: something concealed, something deliberately set against a lighter ground. Constant worked with saffron and Italian bergamot to set a warm, conspiratorial tone, then sent the composition into deeper territory with rose absolute and orris at its center. The opening spices are immediate and close to the skin, less an announcement than a lean-in.
What makes Trama Nera structurally interesting is the tension between its floral heart and its resinous, woody base. Rose absolute sits at the center of the composition, and surrounding it with the dry sweetness of orris root creates a smoothing effect that keeps the heart from feeling sharp. Meanwhile, the base pulls in multiple directions at once: oud for depth, cedarwood for structure, patchouli for earthiness, Australian sandalwood for cream, and Siam benzoin for that almost-licorice warmth.
