The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Forest Blessing arrived in 2025 as part of the SHIRO PERFUME collection, composed by Jasmine Liu. The name points somewhere specific: a dark-canopied woodland where stillness has weight and the air carries resin. Liu built the composition around that tension between shelter and depth, pairing the cool resinous snap of balsam fir with the darker pull of oud underneath. The opening is spiced and bright, cardamom and nutmeg catching light the way it would through branches. Then rose and jasmine arrive like something blooming in an unexpected clearing, brief and deliberate, before cedars and sandalwood take over. It is a fragrance that asks you to slow down rather than speed up, to notice what is underneath the surface.
The interesting choice here is placing balsam fir in the heart rather than treating it as a top-note effect. Fir can sometimes appear briefly in compositions, bright and coniferous, and then vanish. Here it sits next to black rose and jasmine, anchoring the florals with a green, resinous backbone that keeps the sweetness from tipping soft. The oud at the base is the other structural move. It is not an oud that dominates or announces itself.
The evolution
The opening is bright and almost festive. Bergamot lifts the cardamom and nutmeg, creating a spiced-citrus effect that reads warm rather than sharp, like mulled something on a cold afternoon. The nutmeg especially adds a rounded sweetness that softens any sharpness from the spices. As the composition moves forward, the florals start to surface. Black rose and jasmine arrive quietly, not as a lush bouquet but as something more restrained, a dark floral that feels deliberate. The balsam fir enters alongside them, and that combination, coniferous green and deep rose, is where the fragrance finds its center. It smells like a walk through evergreens where something unexpected is blooming at ground level. The fir persists throughout the wear, threading through every phase like a spine, giving the whole composition its cool, sappy character. In the later stages, the base settles in.
Cultural impact
Black Forest Blessing reads as a cold-weather composition that does not need to be loud to be present. The kind of scent that fits into a wardrobe of considered choices, worn by people who would rather be interesting than impressive. It occupies a space between forest aromatics and refined woody perfumery, carrying enough darkness to feel grounded and enough green lift to stay alive. The spiced opening gives it warmth without weight, and the oud-anchored base gives it depth without heaviness. You can wear it to a quiet dinner or to a long walk under grey light, and it will read correctly in both settings.
