The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Luca Maffei built Bombay Gourmand as a different kind of hunger. Where the original Forbidden Words opened sharp, with lime and tobacco, this reinterpretation arrives soft, almost shy. Rose and almond blossom offer a brief greeting before the night deepens. The composition translates the city's warmth into scent, where sweetness and darkness share space, neither one winning. Salted caramel and oud arrive together, creating a tension that holds for hours. The gourmand notes lead the way through this layered creation, with the caramel providing a rich, buttery sweetness that intertwines with the smoky, resinous depth of the oud. Rose lends a velvety softness that tempers the intensity, while almond blossom adds a delicate, nutty warmth to the opening.
What makes this composition work is the salted caramel note, it's not a dessert afterthought but a structural choice. It threads through the oud rather than sitting on top of it, creating a savory-sweet tension that refuses to resolve into one thing. The cypriol and davana add an aromatic complexity that keeps the heart from becoming simply sweet. Maffei uses oud as a foundation, not a feature, it deepens everything without dominating. The vanilla that emerges in the base is warm and enveloping, blending with patchouli to create a signature that lingers close to the skin.
The evolution
The opening is soft, rose and orange blossom offering a brief greeting before the heart begins to emerge. Oud and salted caramel don't compete; they negotiate. The sweetness peaks in the heart, hitting its richest point before beginning its slow retreat as the composition evolves. The later stages bring labdanum and cedar forward, creating something darker and quieter. The vanilla doesn't disappear, it blends into the skin, warm and close. Patchouli adds earth without heaviness. What remains is a signature that's intimate, not loud. This is a fragrance that starts sweet and ends with deeper, more complex notes. The oud persists, holding its presence as the sweeter elements fade, creating a foundation that speaks of restraint and depth.
Cultural impact
Forbidden Words Bombay Gourmand represents a bold direction in niche perfumery, bringing together oud and caramel in a way that feels both familiar and unexpected. The pairing creates an approachable entry point for those curious about oud while satisfying lovers of gourmand sweetness. This sweet-oriental direction offers complexity without aggression, inviting wearers into a world of layered scent experiences. The composition bridges different fragrance territories, creating something that appeals across preference categories.
