The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Samourai, the house anchored in Alain Delon's perfume empire, launched Light Plus in 2006 as a limited-edition mens scent. The brand name itself references Japanese heritage, and the house has long balanced modern brightness with subtle nods to traditional cedar and hinoki woods. Light Plus was conceived as an aromatic counterpoint to those darker, woodier signatures, a fragrance that could capture daylight in a bottle.
Light Plus reflects a philosophy of accessible brightness: the opening fruits are chosen for universal appeal, the florals add refinement without stepping into feminine territory, and the woody-musky base ensures longevity without projecting heaviness. Pairing-wise, the citrus and tropical fruits work naturally with casual, sporty contexts, while the amber and cedarwood allow it to transition seamlessly into an office environment.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with green apple and lemon delivering immediate tartness, quickly joined by lychee, melon, and pineapple in a cascade of tropical fruit. This opening is designed to evoke morning energy. As the top notes fade, freesia and lily emerge as the heart, softening the composition into clean florals. The journey culminates in a drydown where amber warmth meets cedarwood and java vetiver, finishing with soft musk that extends the scent well into the evening.
Cultural impact
Light Plus, released as a limited edition in 2006, quickly became a quiet favorite among collectors who appreciate Samouraï’s blend of bright fruit and restrained Japanese woods. Its niche status and the Alain Delon association give it a subtle cache, often mentioned alongside Katana and Light Air as the brand’s lighter, more playful side.
