Why it exists.
The beginning
Atelier Chai arrived in 2023 as part of RboW's Case Study series, a numbered exploration where each release receives its own focused treatment. The composition was created by Massenet, who built the fragrance around the spiced tea that carries cardamom, clove, and cinnamon across cultures. The concept translates chai into a wearable composition that reads more aromatic than edible, capturing the warmth and comfort of a steaming cup without veering into gourmand territory. The chai reference grounds the scent in something universally recognizable, a shared ritual of spice and steam, while the perfumer's hand reshapes it into something that belongs on skin rather than in a teapot.
Massenet built the chai illusion through a parallel track of warming aromatics: clove and turmeric up top, Madagascan cinnamon and tonka bean absolute at the heart. The cherry note is an unexpected pivot, lending a dried-fruit sweetness that stops the spice from tipping into something purely savory. The opening hits with a bright bite of clove sharpened by turmeric's earthy root quality, and that duo sets a warm, almost smoky tone before the cinnamon and tonka bean unfurl underneath.
The evolution
The opening arrives with bite. Clove and turmeric push forward together, almost peppery, while the bergamot keeps things from going heavy. For the first 30 minutes, it reads more like a spiced tisane than a perfume, aromatic and clean at the edges. As the heart develops, Madagascan cinnamon takes the wheel, joined by tonka bean absolute's almond-cream warmth and a thread of cherry that adds a jammy sweetness without becoming gourmand. The drydown is where Atelier Chai settles into its final character: bourbon vanilla absolute rounds everything off, cedarwood adds a dry, woody backbone, and myrrh absolute brings a smoky, resinous gravity. Sulawesi patchouli grounds the base with an earthy, slightly sweet dampness. The overall arc runs warm and dense, lasting well past the workday on most skin types. What survives longest is the myrrh and vanilla pairing, a quiet, smoky sweetness that lingers on fabric the next morning.
