The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Police, the Italian eyewear brand founded in 1983, brought its bold, urban attitude into fragrance with Original in 1998. Rather than chasing luxury positioned fragrances, Police aimed to bottle the energy of city mornings for the everyday man. The perfumer chose an accessible aromatic fougère structure built from mint, lavender, and bergamot in the opening, recognizing that these notes deliver immediate freshness that reads as clean and confident without requiring olfactory sophistication to appreciate.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of urban utility: mint cuts through morning grogginess, lavender and bergamot project confidence in tight spaces, and cedarwood provides endurance that survives a long day on foot or by transit. The addition of geranium and violet in the heart ensures the fragrance does not flatten into a single-note cleanser, while sandalwood and musk keep the drydown from becoming harsh. This careful calibration of bright opening, floral transition, and woody base creates a scent meant to function across varied urban environments, from the gym to the office to an evening out.
The evolution
Original begins as a brisk, cool rush of mint and lavender softened slightly by citrus bergamot, immediately signaling freshness and purpose. The geranium heart then adds a green floral dimension that replaces the minty chill with something slightly warmer and more complex. Violet arrives as a bridge, its powdery sweetness calming the rougher edges of the herbs. By the time the drydown sets in, cedarwood has taken firm control, lending dry woody structure while sandalwood adds just enough cream to keep the scent approachable. Musk holds everything close to the skin, ensuring the wearer remains aware of the fragrance without broadcasting it to the room.
Cultural impact
Since its 1998 debut, Original has become a reference point for late‑90s aromatic fougères, often recalled for its crisp mint‑bergamot opening that captures the era’s club‑ready energy while remaining office‑friendly. Wearers cite its balanced projection as a bridge between youthful vigor and mature confidence, cementing its place in the genre’s nostalgic catalogue.
