Mystical Misfit arrived in 2019 from Pinrose. The official line calls it a fruity-floral chypre, a category that usually means classical, dense, and reserved. This particular release was composed by Richard Herpin, a perfumer with a clear hand in the composition. On first encounter the scent opens with a juicy tumble of red currant, plum, and peach, bright enough to read almost candy-like before the chypre structure pulls everything into sharper focus. The fruit reads less like dessert and more like something just-picked, with a tart edge that keeps the sweetness honest.
What keeps Mystical Misfit from tipping into pure sugar is the interaction between the fruit top notes and the geranium running through the middle. The bourbon geranium acts as a bridge between the red currant and raspberry on top and the pink rose and jasmine sambac at the heart, lending a green, almost bitter edge that stops the sweetness from collapsing into candy. The fruit reads like just-ripe rather than overripe, and the florals carry a faint herbal sharpness thanks to that geranium corridor.
The evolution
On skin the opening belongs to the fruit. Plum and raspberry arrive bright and syrupy all at once, with red currant giving the whole first impression a tart seam that keeps the sweetness from feeling cloying.
