The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Secrets of Love is the collection through which Martine Micallef wanted to use mysterious keys to unveil the secrets of love. Gourmet is one of those keys. Chestnut anchors the composition, its warm, slightly smoky character softened by creamy vanilla and grounded by leather. The fragrance unfolds quietly on the skin, revealing layers that shift from nutty warmth to a softly sweet drydown. It lingers close to the wearer, revealing its complexity gradually rather than announcing itself loudly. This is a scent that rewards patience, inviting those nearby to lean in rather than demanding attention from across a room. Each wearing reveals something new, from the initial bright opening through the warm, enveloping heart to the soft, lingering finish.
Chestnut takes center stage here, and it behaves unlike any other nut note in perfumery. The note reads as slightly animalic, bringing an earthy depth that feels more natural than manufactured. Paired with leather and incense, it creates a smoky-nutty warmth that feels worn rather than applied. The raspberry in the top keeps the opening from becoming heavy, brightening the initial impression without overwhelming the composition. The violet adds a quiet floral softness that prevents the heart from tipping into darkness.
The evolution
The incense smoke arrives first, clean and aromatic. Raspberry cuts through immediately, bright and tart. Within minutes, the chestnut takes over the heart. Sweet, nutty, with a faint animal undertone that has nothing to do with skatole and everything to do with the way chestnuts smell when they're still warm. Leather and violet layer underneath, adding structure and softness respectively. The drydown is where this one earns its longevity. Vanilla and oud settle close to the skin, with labdanum adding a resinous warmth that lingers past the point you expect it to. On most skin types, this lasts a full workday or longer.
Cultural impact
The Secrets of Love collection from Parfums M Micallef explores romantic themes through scent. Each fragrance in the line uses the metaphor of mysterious keys to unlock different facets of love, with Gourmet focusing on the indulgent, sensory side. The collection draws inspiration from both Western perfumery traditions and incense craftsmanship, creating compositions with depth and longevity. Gourmet stands out within the line for its unconventional pairing of chestnut and raspberry, a combination that balances warmth with unexpected brightness.
