The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Light of Bangkok was born from a collaboration between Parfums Dusita and the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, marking the hotel's 150th anniversary. For Pissara Umavijani, the commission carried personal weight, one of her most vivid childhood memories is walking alongside the Chao Phraya River with her father, admiring the hotel's graceful architecture from the water. When the house was approached to create a fragrance worthy of this milestone, Pissara drew on that memory as her anchor. She envisioned the scent as a reflection of the hotel's elegance and hospitality, inspired by its architecture and its signature celadon green color.
The note structure itself enacts that cultural dialogue. Lemongrass, bergamot, and clary sage open the composition with a Thai botanical brightness, green, citrused, immediately transportive. The orris butter at the heart is where French classical perfumery enters: expensive, technically demanding, and rarely used in modern compositions. It creates a velvety, powdery softness that elevates the entire structure beyond a standard fresh fragrance. Jasmine and ylang-ylang add tropical warmth, paying direct tribute to Thailand's floral heritage.
The evolution
Lemongrass hits first, bright, citrused, almost bracing. Bergamot and clary sage follow within minutes, softening the herbal edge into something more luminous. The opening reads clean and green, with a quiet sophistication that announces itself without shouting. Within the first hour, the heart takes over. Orris and jasmine emerge together in a way that's hard to pull apart individually but unmistakably beautiful as a whole, powdery without being dusty, floral without being heavy. The ylang-ylang adds a tropical warmth that prevents the composition from feeling too cool or too European. Projection through the heart phase is generous. The drydown arrives quietly, settling into sandalwood, vetiver, and musk. The vetiver provides an aromatic, slightly smoky lift; the sandalwood keeps everything creamy and warm.
Cultural impact
Light of Bangkok occupies a specific space at the intersection of Thai heritage and French refinement. The note structure speaks to a wider dialogue between Eastern and Western perfumery traditions. The orris-ylang-ylang pairing is unusual, combining the cool powderiness of classical French perfumery with the tropical warmth of Thai florals. The opening brings bright citrus and herbal clarity that softens into a luminous green character, while the heart unfolds with orris and jasmine creating an intricate floral interplay that feels both sophisticated and grounded.
