The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rose & Litchi arrived in 2023 as part of Berdoues' ongoing conversation with French floral tradition. The house has spent over a century finding new ways to say 'flowers from Grasse' without sounding like a museum piece. This fragrance takes the obvious pairing, rose, and something tropical to keep it from getting heavy, and executes it with uncommon restraint. No towering rose accord. No syrupy litchi overload. Just two materials that have always belonged together, finally given a structure that lets each one breathe.
What makes this composition work is the honesty of its materials. The rose isn't trying to be ancient or precious, it's a clean, modern rose with fruit already built into its character. Lychee reinforces that quality without redundancy: same family of sweetness, different texture. The blackcurrant does something interesting, it adds a slight tartness that prevents the whole thing from going flat. Without it, the heart would be one long, sweet note. With it, there's actual movement. Musk and cedar in the base aren't doing heavy lifting; they're there to remind you that skin has warmth, that flowers don't last forever, and that a fragrance should feel like a person, not a candle.
The evolution
The opening is a study in cleanliness. Mandarin orange and orange blossom arrive together, not competing, just reinforcing the same message: morning, light, effortless. The orange blossom hangs around a bit longer than expected, maybe fifteen minutes, before the rose gradually takes its place. By the thirty-minute mark, you're in the heart. The rose blooms here slowly, not a sudden reveal, more like watching a flower open in a time-lapse. Lychee and blackcurrant arrive almost simultaneously, the blackcurrant's tartness cutting through the sweetness just enough to keep things interesting. This phase lasts the longest, maybe two to three hours. Then the hand-off to base notes happens so gradually you might miss it, the fruity sweetness recedes, and what's left is warm skin: musk, cedar, sandalwood in a loose, skin-hugging drydown. By the fourth hour, it's intimate and close. By the sixth, unless you're hugging someone, it's gone.
Cultural impact
Rose & Litchi represents a strategic pivot for Parfums Berdoues, a historic French house established in 1902 on the Rue de la Paix in Paris. The 2023 launch signals the brand's intent to compete in the accessible luxury segment against rising niche fragrance houses. This release arrives during a period of renewed consumer interest in fruity-floral compositions, particularly among younger demographics seeking quality at moderate price points. The fragrance's accessible positioning and modern packaging reflect broader industry trends toward democratizing premium perfumery.
