The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
When and Other Stories entered fragrance in 2014, it commissioned Jerome Epinette to capture the brand's editorial sensibility in a bottle. The brief centered on the crisp snap of fresh apple and the DIY ethos of punk culture, asking for a scent that felt both rebellious and wearable. Epinette understood that punk, at its core, is about accessibility and attitude rather than exclusivity, so he built the fragrance around notes that feel immediate and recognizable. Green apple and tangerine provide that instant gratification, while the floral heart and warm base suggest a complexity that rewards continued wear.
The note pyramid in Punk Bouquet serves a clear philosophy: startle, soften, then settle. Green apple and tangerine function as an immediate conversation starter, the olfactory equivalent of making eye contact across a room. The floral heart then invites intimacy, with cyclamen, lotus, and orchid working together to create a soft, almost delicate middle ground. The base of vanilla, tonka bean, and oakmoss represents the lasting impression, the memory that lingers after the initial encounter. This structure mirrors how genuine connections form: initial impression, deeper exploration, and finally, the comfort of familiarity.
The evolution
Punk Bouquet begins with a declaration: green apple and tangerine announce themselves clearly, creating an opening that feels both modern and slightly retro, like biting into a fresh orchard apple on a sunny morning. The almond adds a layer of intrigue, a nutty undertone that hints at depth without announcing it. As time passes, the heart notes of cyclamen, lotus, and orchid take over, shifting the fragrance from bright to delicate. This transition feels deliberate, almost like watching someone remove a leather jacket to reveal something softer underneath. The drydown is where the scent finds its true identity. Vanilla and tonka bean provide comfort, but oakmoss keeps the scent honest. There is no pretending this is merely a sweet fragrance; the earthiness of oakmoss ensures that warmth comes with an edge.
Cultural impact
Since its 2014 debut, Punk Bouquet has been praised for its gender‑neutral vibe, often highlighted in style blogs as a go‑to everyday scent for creative professionals. Its playful fruit‑floral‑vanilla blend has sparked conversations about modern, accessible luxury within the H&M Group’s broader fashion ecosystem.
