The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 1996, Brazilian fragrance house O Boticário was steadily building a catalog rooted in accessible, recognizable scents, and Ops! In Red arrived as part of the brand's color-coded Ops! collection. Rather than catering to traditional perfumery trends, the line used color as its organizing principle, each shade signaling a distinct personality through its juice and bottle alike. Ops! In Red stood out for its commitment to a single bold fruit note at the top: watermelon. That choice gave the fragrance an immediate, almost edible quality in the opening, the kind of bright fruit hit that feels like biting into something cold and sweet on a hot day. The watermelon dominates the first moments, reading fleshy and pink rather than green or vegetal, with a sweetness that feels pulpy and direct.
The watermelon note in the opening is what separates this from the standard fruity-floral template. The fruit reads undeniably ripe, closer to the pink flesh than the rind, which gives it an almost candied warmth without veering into syrup. As the top opens up, the watermelon registers with that translucent juiciness you only get from the real fruit, a cool sweetness that thins out gradually rather than burning off abruptly. By the time it starts to settle, magnolia takes over the middle of the composition.
The evolution
The opening belongs entirely to watermelon. Cold, green, a little sweet, almost like pressing your tongue against the rind, the note arrives with an immediate juiciness that fills the air around the wearer. Then magnolia slides in underneath, taking the sweetness somewhere creamier and more grounded. The transition is gradual, the watermelon losing its translucent chill as the floral builds its presence. Black pepper shows up quietly through the heart, not as heat but as a faint coolness, the suggestion of something drier behind the softness. As the composition settles, the fruit fades and the white floral carries more of the weight. Magnolia at this stage reads warmer than it did in the opening, its lemony edge mellowing into something closer to soft soap or clean skin. The base, woody notes and musk, arrives softly as the magnolia loosens its grip.
Cultural impact
Within O Boticário's catalog, Ops! In Red occupies a specific lane: it's the watermelon-driven entry in the brand's color-coded Ops! collection, a lineup where each fragrance corresponds to a different color and a different mood. Its watermelon-forward opening gives it an immediate recognition factor. The fruit note is loud enough to read from a distance, and the magnolia heart softens that brightness into something more wearable for everyday contexts. The black pepper keeps the sweetness from feeling juvenile, and the woody-musky base gives the composition a grounded finish that holds up across the day.
