The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Malbec 20 exists because twenty iterations of the same idea finally found their sharpest expression. Nicolas Beaulieu designed this as a statement piece for the Malbec line, O Boticário's wine-inspired collection that references Malbec grapes through a Brazilian lens. The numbered edition and Pininfarina-designed bottle communicate that this isn't a daily driver. Malbec 20 is a destination. The kind of fragrance you wear when you've already decided to make an impression and you know exactly which notes will do it. The composition opens with bright citrus and warm spice, transitioning through a resinous heart before settling into a dark, persistent base. Each layer builds on the last, creating a fragrance that rewards attention.
The note structure breaks from typical woody-oriental templates in one specific way: the Timur berry in the heart. Timur delivers a citrusy, almost effervescent pepper that most Western compositions skip entirely. Here it acts as a bridge between the bright, liqueur-like opening and the dark resinous base, keeping the middle from feeling like a transition zone and instead giving it its own identity. Combined with galbanum's green balsamic lift and the warm resin of labdanum, the heart of Malbec 20 holds its own rather than simply heralding the drydown.
The evolution
The opening hits like a spirit served neat, saffron's metallic warmth, tangerine's bright citrus, then the herbaceous wave: thyme and rosemary arriving together with a slight camphor lift from the rosemary. Nutmeg adds a brown-spice warmth underneath. The Timor berry emerges first in the heart, delivering that unexpected peppered-citrus spark against the resinous labdanum. Galbanum adds a green, almost medicinal lift. Mastic or lentisque provides a piney-woody quality that keeps things from going too sweet. The base announces itself with tobacco leaf and patchouli leading the drydown, dark, slightly smoky, with the warmth of aged wood. Sandalwood and cedar round out the woody structure while cashmeran adds a soft, almost powdery warmth that keeps the finish from being harsh. Agarwood appears in the deeper hours, lending animalic complexity that rewards patience.
Cultural impact
Malbec 20 represents the twentieth iteration of O Boticário's most successful fragrance line. The Malbec collection has become a reference point for Brazilian men who want sophistication without the imported luxury tax. Each numbered edition in the line carries more weight than the standard releases, and Malbec 20 is a significant statement within the collection. For the brand's audience, this release marks an occasion worth marking. The combination of rare materials and limited production creates something that feels earned rather than simply bought.
